Closing Schools in Ontario

Deciding which schools should stay open, and which schools should close is a difficult one.

Through a process called “accommodation reviews”, boards will decide which schools to keep open, which schools to close, which schools need additions, or where new schools are needed.

Special Education

Education in Ontario includes all students, regardless of need or ability. Special education programs are meant to provide services to students with special needs. Parents often have questions about special education.

Community Use of Schools

School buildings and schoolyards are the hub of activity for many communities. Yet fees for community use have made schools unaffordable for many groups.

How can we include more parents at our school?

Parents are engaged in their children’s early learning and education in many ways.

  • Many help with homework.
  • Many come to parent-teacher interviews.
  • Some volunteer on field trips.
  • Some belong to school councils.

What is the balanced school day?

A  Balanced School Day (BSD) is a different way of organizing the school day.It includes:

  • Three extended blocks of teaching time.
  • Two 40-50 minute breaks (instead of a lunch break and two recess breaks).

What is the EQAO?

The letters EQAO stand for Education Quality and Accountability Office. They are an arm’s-length agency of the provincial government. They are responsible for testing students in Ontario in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10.

What is the new Provincial Parent Board?

The Ministry of Education has appointed 18 parents to the new Ontario Provincial Parent Board.
