What is the Ontario College of Teachers?

The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) regulates the teaching profession in Ontario.  The College is responsible for:

  • setting the requirements for a teaching certificate, to ensure Ontario's students are taught by qualified, skilled teachers
  • issuing teaching certificates and suspending or revoking them when required
  • establishing standards of practice and conduct for teachers in Ontario
  • setting the standards for and accrediting teacher training programs in universities
  • maintaining a register of qualified teachers
  • investigating complaints against teachers
  • providing professional development programs for teachers

Do you want to find out more about a teacher or principal's qualifications? 

By visiting the Find A Teacher section of the College's website, you can search by name to find out:

  • where and when the teacher earned both his/her undergraduate and education degrees
  • any special qualifications earned (eg. Reading Specialist, principal qualification)
  • any disciplinary history, if applicable
  • the teacher's current status with the College (eg. good standing, suspended, retired).
